I’m a Merchant Mariner trying to change jobs. I’m trying to figure out when I should tell my employer I might be quitting. Ideally, I’d quit after I had the other job secured, and then I a two-weeks notice, but in my case I don’t think that will be possible.
I recently have been transferred to another division within the same company and promoted. I now have 2-3x more work, less downtime, more responsibilities, and with my new pay raise I’ll be making several thousand dollars less because of my new scheduling that has me working 2 less months a year.
Within a few days of that, I received a offer with another division of the same parent company. I had worked with them previously, and I was interested in this job, but I turned it down. I turned it down because I was offered a job with the government. I didn’t want to transfer, and then possibly quit shortly after.
For the past few weeks, I’ve been on leave due to my regular scheduled time off and an unexpected medical “issue” that has now been cleared. I expect my employer to be calling me after the Holidays to return to work.
The issue:I have a scheduled pre-employment physical soon. If I’m called back to work and miss my appointment, that job opportunity is likely going down the drain, and I really want to give it a shot. I believe the government job has higher long-term potential for me, career wise. I work on a ship, so I can’t just take those particular days off once I’ve returned to work.
Do I burn the bridge I’m standing on, and tell my employer I might be quitting and to hold off on flying me back to work?
I’d like to stay with my current employer if that job somehow fell through, at least in the interim. I‘m not fond of the idea of quitting before the other job has been secured completely, but I’m not sure what my other options are.
