Interview for new job next week. I was recently employed 3 months ago. How should I explain wanting to leave the company so soon?

Civil Engineer. I got my professional engineering license (PE) in June. The past 4 years I was with a one man engineering company, he was a family friend that needed help and he offered to teach me until I got my license then he would retire.

After I got licensed, I traveled for about 2 months and applied for some jobs online.

My intent was to work in government as a civil engineer. I applied in August, it was September already and got no response even though the automated system said I was qualified and they were sending out my application to the different engineering departments.

In September I decided to start applying for private companies. I applied and accepted a job offer.

I’ve been with this company now for 3 months, I enjoy some of the people, some I don’t, they feed us well, but the work is overwhelming and some nights I spend 12+ hours working, salaried exempt.

My friend who works as a civil engineer in government suggested to follow up with my apps by giving me the contact info of the hiring managers.

I got a call this week for an interview this week.

I’m sure my short time will come up in the interview. How should I explain that I want to leave my current company after only working for 3 months?
