Posted the details in r/legaladvice, but essentially my boyfriend's boss is trying to force employees to switch to 1099 without correctly changing the expectations about the job to match 1099 status (ie keeping defined work hours, reporting to supervisors, forcing employees to continue buying company materials and wear company attire, etc.).
Tomorrow they're meeting about it and if he doesn't sign he will be fired.
What should he do? He currently has a 5-page email drafted addressing his concerns. If he sends it, he runs the risk of losing his job. He's currently waiting to hear back from a potential employer after 2 interviews and he has enough savings to live 12+ months off of, but it's a difficult decision for him.
Sign and wait to file a complaint with the IRS or refuse and get fired? Should he send the email?
Thanks for any advice.
