Hi all,
Apology in advance if this is the wrong place.
I have noticed a common trend from this sub: anger, depression and frustration due to not getting hired despite being qualified.
Keep in mind that it could not be you, it's them.
I work as a civil engineer and have participated in evaluating potential interns during interviews. Note: I do not have the final say in whom to hire.
It's very rare that we have a candidate who meets all the requirements for the internship, even for full-time position that requires at least an E.I.T. Often time, the supervisor in charge of the intern will select whom he or she feel is best fit. This, in my opinion, is very frustrating and unfair due to subjective natures.
An example: we had a student who was a great fit (my opinion). He showed up an hour early for the interview, had a ton of great experiences that are irrelevant to the position (shows he can learn), had seven references (can work with others), great G.P.A.(works hard in school), knew his AutoCad, GIS, etc.
But the supervisor decided to hire a student who had no work experiences, had no knowledge of GIS, had no references. That intern quit the job three months in and did not perform quality work for the department.
Prior to hiring that intern, the supervisor mention how she liked the way the intern wore a suite to the interview. Yep, that's it. A suite was the reason a more qualified candidate was rejected.
