Proof that still sexism and racism exists.(How to overcome it in your job hunting)

So after being in canada for 10 months and sending out my resume to all the jobs related to my profession and getting only a few phone interviews and then getting rejected after that. I decided to do a research on why I'm still unemployed.

Although I went to all the workshops about resume, cover letter and I've attended a 3 months technical bridging program for newcomers. but still nobody wanted to gave me a chance.

I've found out that unfortunately in 2019 I have characteristiscs that limit my chance of finding a good job in here:

  1. I am a woman in my early 30s.
what they think of me: she could be pregnant or become pregnant or already have kids and can't be 100 devoted to this job.

  2. I am middle eastern and have an arabic sounding name and surname.although I'm not arab but most people think I am.
what they think of me: she probably can't speak english very well. let's hire jack.
  3. I have curly hair.
what they think of me: yup. you've read it right. if you have curly hair people don't take you seriously. some people even don't see it as professional. it means if you go to an interview with your natural hair, there is a chance that the person thinks of you as not professional.

What did I do about it?

since 2 weeks ago, I did something that changed everything. now my inbox is full of emails requesting for phone interviews and face to face interviews that I can't believe my eyes. I even got contacted by people on linkedin for some positions that I didn't even applied to.

I changed these things:

  1. I removed my LinkedIn picture and put a random nature picture instead of my own picture.
  2. I changed my name to a western name (not legally, just use a nick name instead of your real name) and used only the first letter of my surname. Since I knew about this article, i decided to choose a unisex name so people assume that I'm a male.
  3. Then I sent out the same resume and cover letter but this time it worked.

There is an unconscious bias when people look at your linkedin profile or your resume. if you change those factors and reach to the phone interview, you will get the chance to talk to them and make them know the real you. that way you will increase your chance of getting a job offer.
