I’m 32/F/Los Angeles (a/s/l, sup?) and never knew I could negotiate salary. I read that nearly half of men negotiate a job offer, while just a third of women do. As someone who has had multiple unpaid internships, started off their career making $100 a week and never hit above $50K until my 30s, I thought, THIS is the time where I ask for what I’m worth. I have more than 10 years of professional experience and nearly 7 in my field.
So I was offered a salaried position at $68K plus 10 days PTO. They have health benefits, 401k and stock option. This company is several years old, kind of an ecomm startup; they’ve raised a lot of money from investors and I’m pretty sure they’re making good revenue. The commute would have me in the car 1.25-2 hours per day. In my previous role with a different company, I was making $35/hour with no benefits (contract employee) and had a good commute.
I received the offer the Friday before the long weekend. Mulled it over on the weekend (I was traveling in a different time zone) and then politely said I’d be more comfortable with $72,500 ($4.5k over asking), which is the market value for someone in my field in Los Angeles with my years of relevant experience (this is true according to Glassdoor!). However I may have shot myself in the foot by ALSO asking to work remotely 1-2 days per week because of the commute; initially the manager said it’s a flexible office in terms of hours and some people work different hours or occasional remote.
Soooo the company wasn’t thrilled with my ask. Manager said working remotely is at executive discretion after an employee has been with the company a year. And apparently I had a math typo in the hourly rate I stated along with annual salary. They said they needed to go back to the executives to ask about my requested salary. Also this company had said I was their first choice candidate and wanted me to start next week; they assumed I’d sign the offer letter right away.
I feel SO dumb for negotiating at all, and feel greedy for asking for more money as well as remote privileges 1-2 days per week. But it’s a long commute for me, and I would be stepping down a bit in salary from my last role even though this is salaried and has benefits. Am I an entitled millennial diva in making this ask?! Was it too much? I don’t care as much about benefits, as I’m used to paying my own health insurance and have never had a 401k. I’ve been lectured so much about how I need to advocate for myself and that I should be making more money, but now I feel selfish and unworthy for trying to negotiate. Thank you so much for reading and offering any insight 🥴
