I’ve never met my boss before. How do I go about asking for a raise?

I’ve been working as a respite/habilitation provider since August. Both my family and my clients’ families are telling me I should ask for a raise. I feel confident that I qualify for a pay raise, given my experience, commitment, and quality of work. The problem is that I’ve never actually met my boss before. We communicate solely through email or text. Is it appropriate in this circumstance to ask for a raise via email?
