I am an expat living in Europe, I have 4.5 years experience under my belt in my role. I am in IT so it is easy to find a new job as you'd imagine.
I work in an American company, a leader in IT, in my current role, I know I am underpayed compares to other peers. I talked to my manager and we had a 1.5 year plan for a promotion a cash bonus, and stock options. 6 months passed since then, and the cash bonus did not happen due to change in policy. Stock options should happen in 3 months.
My concerns :
- I do not know what the promotion would mean salary wise.
- if I jump ship I can double my salary in an other city. of course it will take few months of interviews to make sure I land the right one. This is important as we want to buy an apartement next year and the location is essential.
- I have a baby girl so current job offer me flexibility in taking few hours off to take her to the pediatrician checks, vaccination...etc. I am afraid I will loose that if I start a new job. Plus, I don't wanna miss spending time with her, as the new job for sure will be demanding at the beginning.
My action plan:
- I set up a meeting with my manager in two weeks, where I will directly state that i am not happy with my salary, see if we can expedite the 1.5 year plan, and ask to understand the % that I can get. I am contemplating asking for a salary review.
What do you think about my fears and action plan?
Ps. My manager is awsome, she cares, and I kinda feel loyal to her, which is a first for me. I was very pragmatic before joining this company. And I am afraid my next boss will be shitty.
Ps#2. I do like the job and what I currently do. It has room to grow, but it seems there 're a lot of limitation when it comes to salary raise.
