Asking for a raise after 6 months

I'm coming up on six months with my company. I get paid an hourly wage and was given a $1 raise after my probation of 3 months. I do get my hourly rate, and then i can get commission only if my commission is higher than my hourly, whoch would replace my hourly if it is above that.

I was just curious if it would be appropriate to ask for a raise, and if so, what would be appropriate? I'm just looking to make a little more now to cover expenses and live comfortably. I had a meeting with the owner, and he basically said that I shouldn't expect to see the commission kick in for a while. If i need to give more information, i can provide that.
