Hey all. I’m a manager for a small team and most of our work if not all can be done online. I run an online entertainment site.
My H and I are moving to Los Angeles bc of his job. I need to talk to my work about the move and I’m trying to decide the following:
-
How to break the news - just say hey for personal reasons I have to move.
-
When to tell - I need to move a month and a half from now, so I thought telling him around now gives him time to make a decision. If I can keep the job that’s great but if not, then this gives me time to look and help them find someone or train. I’ve loved working for this place and if it has to be that I can’t work remote, I’d want to help them be prepped for when I go.
-
How to ask if I can continue my position remotely.
For some background: Several managers in my company work remotely, and my job and my team can be handled remotely in my eyes. My boss has mentioned often he’s trying to get more of the company in one city — but I’ve never seen a push to get the remote managers to move to the city we are in.
So I do feel I have a good argument to make in that if these other managers can do this, I know I can too.
Also, I’m moving to LA and that’s an entertainment hub so I see many benefits in my working there while running this site - networking, covering events, etc.
I’m nervous about telling my boss about the move for various reasons so any advice is def appreciated.
