I feel extremely conflicted regarding an offer I am expecting next week, and was wondering what you all think?
I work in a department with a coworker who I would consider a good friend. This coworker helped get me my current job. He is a full time continuing position, and I am on a term position slated to end in August. I have been searching for jobs since September. I'm beginning to get some luck with interviews - but up until this month I was having a very difficult time.
My coworker approached me about a job he applied for, which is basically an identical job that we both have now. I waited until the very last day of the opening - and I threw my resume in as well. I figured, at least the position is full time continuing, and I wouldn't have to worry about job security.
Well... him and I were both interviewed. But my references were called, and his were not. My primary reference told me it sounded like that are intent on hiring me next week.
Now... background information: this job is in a location that I have *always* dreamed of living in. Where my best friends have migrated to, and in a location that will more than satisfy my lifestyle and hobbies. This job is higher paying than my current position, and as I've said, is full time continuing.
I feel extraordinarily conflicted. On the one hand I am getting very excited about the potential offer next week. I already have a place I can stay, it seems like the life change I have dreamed of for the last 4 years. On the other hand, I feel like I completely betrayed my friend and coworker. He told me about the job, he was very excited to apply to it, and I applied for the job. I feel like a total snake right now, and it is really getting to me.
I have spoken with him about it, and he nominally told me that he will hold no hard feelings if I do get the job and move out there. But I can tell he is extremely disappointed.
If I reject the offer, and my coworker gets the job, there's a chance I could take his current position and get on full time continuing - but that isn't an absolute guarantee as my department is currently undergoing major management changes. I also have some other interviews lined up as well, for different jobs, in my current location.
I suppose I'm wondering what your guys' thoughts are. Would accepting this offer be extremely immoral?
