I have no concept of how long things should take... at what point should I lose hope?

Hello! I have two situations, but slapping them into one post.

The first, I had a video interview with several people at Company A four weeks ago. It lasted roughly two hours, and I felt like it went fairly well. My interviewers seemed really happy with my experience, and one even remarked that you'd usually see my experience with people with additional degrees. HR told me I'd hear back within 2-3 weeks, and tomorrow it will be 4. They did tell me it could be longer, and I'm very inclined to believe them. I had an impromptu phone screening interview awhile back, and though I emailed to ask for an update and never got one, they called me four weeks later to schedule that video interview. I sent an email yesterday to check in, and while I didn't get a response, I fully expect the process to be the same as before. That said -- without a call or an email, at what point will I just have not gotten the job?

The second scenario is much simpler. My current supervisor has a high-up friend at Company B, where I had a phone interview and was rejected a few weeks ago. Last week, my supervisor emailed me to say that there is another open position and her friend wants to send my application in for that, and said that even though I was rejected, I was in their top group of applicants. Very cool! But for an internal thing like that, how long do those things usually take? This is more for curiosity than anything else, I know patience is really important. But I'm excited. :)
