In December of 2018 I applied and ultimately received an interview at a California State agency. The interview went well, however they hired another applicant over me.
I did receive a direct call from the hiring manager who told me that it was very close and that they hoped I would not be discouraged to apply again. They also told me that I was high on the list of new hires if there is another opening. The manager indicated that I should expect an opening sometime in 2019 and provided me with personal work email and phone to contact if I was still interested. The manager also said they would contact me personally once a job was open before a job announcement was made to the general public.
Fast forward to April 2019....There is another opening at the same California agency but at a different department with a different hiring manager.
My question: Should I contact the previous manager and express my interest in the new department or will that hurt my chances at the existing department? Will simply applying hurt me if the previous department finds out?
I would be fine working at either one honestly. I just don’t want to jeopardize anything I might have had...(if anything was there anyway...it’s not like they promised me anything)
TLDR: CA public agency makes a non-binding statement showing high interest in me. Does showing interest in the same agency but different department hurt my chances at the first department?
