I've got a PhD in a rather specific neuroscience field (and have finished a postdoc) and am struggling to find a job outside of academia. I have a lot of transferrable skills... from writing, to programming to, data analysis, supervising/management and others.
I've applied for somewhere between 50-100 jobs in a variety of fields from data analysis to HR, sales and government across a range of industries. In each case, I've tailored my resume/CV and cover letters to address the selection criteria. I've had other people check it over too. I didn't even receive a response from 95% of places. That's somewhat understandable as most businesses dont have time to call up every applicant, but it was surprising I didn't seem to be progressing to even a phone interview for most places. I have called some places and they have basically said, "We don't hire people with PhD's. It usually ends badly, so even though you're qualified, it's probably going to be a no. Sorry". I mean really?
It's really getting me down which is making it harder and harder to be motivated and apply for jobs. Im struggling. I'm also starting to get worried financially. Does anyone have any advice for me? How can a former postdoc in my position find a job outside of academia? What sort of places would hire someone like me? Would really appreciate any help.
Thanks.
(EDIT: not sure if it's relevant, but I'm based in Australia)
