Talking to a company for almost 3 months now, how much longer should I wait?

I've gone through 3 interviews plus doing an interview assignment for a company I'm interviewing with. It's coming up to 3 months since my first interview (including Christmas holiday time). It's a very small firm.

I was told after my last round about 2 weeks ago that I'd hear back this week. If I don't hear back, should I follow-up? My gut is starting to tell me that I'm probably not their top choice candidate, and they're just keeping me hanging while they interview other candidates.
