I know the conventional wisdom is to ask for more money when you’ve received an offer, but I’m not sure if I should in this case. I left a permanent job to take a temp to perm one where I thought I would learn more marketable skills. The pay in the temp phase was about the same as what I was making before, and I was told that if I performed well, I would be converted to permanent in about 6 months with an undisclosed salary. I was a bit apprehensive because I heard stories of the temp phase going on indefinitely or the permanent offer being way lower than the temp salary, but I decided the risk was worth it for the experience I would gain. That was four months ago. Yesterday, I was called into my boss’s office and given a permanent offer with the exact same pay I received as a temp worker, plus benefits.
I feel conflicted about if I should ask for more. On one hand, I know that companies typically will do whatever they can to save money, and as a result, I shouldn’t feel bad about trying to get more. On the other hand, they’ve made a perfectly reasonable offer ahead of schedule when they knew I had no leverage and could have tried to lowball me. The amount of extra money I could potentially get is not going to really change anything for me, and I feel like asking for more when I agreed to this amount of money as a temp worker four months ago could come off as greedy/trying to take advantage of them. Though I doubt they would rescind the offer, I’m not sure if a chance at an extra few thousand dollars is worth potentially souring my relationship with my boss.
