Is my job unfair or am I just whining?

US based job.

I have been increasingly frustrated and stressed because of my employment. While I think what I am experiencing is unreasonable, part of me wonders and acknowledges the possibility that my perspective may be totally off base since I don’t have a lot of experience in this particular field. If I’m out of line with my complaints please let me know. Otherwise, advice about what to do would be much appreciated.

I work at a company that teaches English to non-English speakers. It’s a completely private business, no public affiliation/subsidies etc.

Here are some of my concerns:

1) Implicit work without payment.

I get paid by the hour. For a full day of classes (almost 6 hours of teaching), I am given 1 hour of preparation time. During this hour we are expected not only to keep up grades, but also create curriculum. The firm is constantly going through teaching philosophy shifts, and as a result there is no prepared curriculum plan to follow. We have some books/websites to use as resources, but as far as an actually course plan, handouts to use, evaluations for the students, etc, we have very little. In addition, our courses change every few weeks when we are expected to start this process over again. I don’t mind this work, but it takes me (and my coworkers) much longer than 1 hour to complete. We all work during unpaid meal breaks, and often at home. We are not explicitly instructed to work at home, but without doing hours of extra work each day, it would be impossible to complete the tasks we are given. Perhaps I am complaining about nothing since all teachers seem to share this story, but getting paid by the hour makes it sting.

Our schedule makes it such that we don’t actually get paid for 8 hours a day, in addition, we have some half days, so overall, despite doing more actual work than 40hrs/week, I am paid for significantly less than that, since much of it is at home, weekends, or meal breaks. In all I make about $25k a year. I was hired under the premise that there would be no raises. I didn’t want that of course, but I was desperate since my spouse had been recently in a paralyzed in an accident and unable to work.

Every month the company tries out new ideas/approaches that we are expected to implement and add to our workload but out hours remain the same. In short we are asked to do work we don’t have time for, and in my opinion, it is implied that we do this work for free since it would be impossible to complete otherwise.

2) Paid time off issues.

The employees get constantly accruing paid time off hours. The problem is, it is extremely difficult to actually take those hours off. We don’t have any people who can take our classes if we are gone. If we are sick and can’t come, those classes are integrated with another class that day, making teachers and students both upset. For this reason, it feels terrible to actually ask for vacation time that is not due to some kind of emergency. When we did have substitutes, we were told only to take off one or two days at a time, because the substitutes can’t create curriculum and class plans like we do, and apparently were not skilled enough to lead a class for an extended period of time. This means any time I take a day off I spend countless hours (unpaid) creating detailed lesson plans from scratch for an apparently incompetent substitute. Now that we don’t have any subs, if I take a day off it makes everyone’s life miserable. As a result, for over a year I have not taken any vacation time, barring a few days due to sickness or other emergencies. I have weeks stored up. If I quit, nothing happens to my untaken hours, they just evaporate.

It wasn’t letting me post so I cut it in half. Continued in comment.
