Need insight on my failed interview. [Long Post]

Today I had an interview at McDonald's. It seemed to go well at first, I was very friendly with the hiring manager and had even mentally prepared myself over the weekend to answer common questions, even the dreaded "Tell me about yourself" question. However, I didn't get any of these.

She started out with a few basics such as noting that I was from Virginia (it's where my first job was, I am currently in a different state looking for jobs). I responded with "Yes, and I lived in Texas for a while." She asked what brought me to [state] and I told her that I just needed a change. When asked what I did in Texas, I told her a was a stay at home spouse. Pretty normal conversation topics, to me anyway.

The first question interview-related question she asked was something along the lines of “Did you ever have an issue with management expecting to much of you and if so, describe how you dealt with it.” Since the only job listed on my application was from 2012 and I didn’t have any issues with that employer, my response was that I never had any problems like that with them.

After that she went on to talk about hours, and asked if I’d be able to come in earlier if needed. I stumbled over this one and accidentally volunteered information regarding transportation, saying I requested night hours as I’d have a ride to work, but had no issue walking to work and that it wasn’t far. She told me it was okay and that she wouldn’t want me to have to walk. Had to mentally slap myself for that one, I knew I’d screwed up. I can’t remember what she asked me next, but she ended with, “Normally I’d setup a second interview with the GM, but he’s sick so I’ll let you know at the end of the day.” No other interview questions other than that one. We shook hands and she went on to the applicant after me. It was a weird feeling, but I knew I’d botched the interview.

A few hours later, I got the email saying I wasn't hired. Even though I expected it, I still felt bummed out over it.

Now for a little bit of background. None of the following came up in the interview by the way. My first job was in a grocery store deli, and I worked there 4 to 5 months. This was back in June '12. My job was short because my husband got his orders for where he'd be stationed, which was in Texas. I put in my two weeks in mid-October. I struggled finding work and for most of the last 6 years I was majorly depressed due to that and also abuse during the relationship. I’ll admit I stopped looking for work for a long time, up until last year when I finally got my ass in gear and was managed to get a job at Goodwill. That job lasted from Jan ’18 to Sept ’18. My reasons for leaving my job included getting sick due to the heat (I worked in the back during summer with no AC), unrealistic expectations piled on with what I was dealing with at home (leading to me moving to another state). I left the job with no notice and left it off my resume. I actually had no idea until today that employers can get employment history. Maybe they saw that, maybe not.

Other than adding the omitted job to my resume and watching what I tell the hiring manager, is there anything I can do to help myself succeed in future interviews?

TLDR: Botched my interview over a question I wasn’t prepared for and volunteering unnecessary information. Also left previous employment history off my resume/application.
