I’m a Business Systems Analyst (identified processes that could be improved or devise new ones - all to better streamline the user experience and the business). I first worked in a make-to-order manufacturing company and then a straight up distribution company. A slight learning curve but I quickly caught on. I would collect the requirements, design the process, test, implement , train and support them. I’d say it was 70% technical and 30% business.
I was laid off and spent 8 months unemployed and landed a job I thought I’d be perfect for. The company culture described and overall feel during my interview were great. However, I have ZERO experience in this industry... EHR (electronic medical records) and instead of working to improve the business, we work with clients to implement their systems and occasionally add a process (though form would be more like it - no workflows).
I thought I could catch up pretty quickly but after 4 months, I’m worrying big time. Not only is my job like 2% technical, the part where I thrived because I had to problem solve, but the other work is just crap the business wants but no else wanted to do. Like listing each form in a spreadsheet, the fields it uses and if it’s in a group of fields.
Anyway - that’s not entirely the point. I can use the system, but it’s difficult for me to even obtains requirements because the clients ask questions that seem to in another language. Medical terminology, acronyms, standards, HIPAA etc.
Are there any resources where I can learn an industry? I’m not happy here or with my work and I know my boss isn’t thrilled with the latter too. It’s so tough because I felt like a rockstar previously - watching the users jump for joy bc I turned an hour process into a 5 minute one. If I can’t find a way learn this stuff, I think I’ll have no choice but to look for a new job in my old industry.
