Has anyone had success going back to their degree after not using it?

I graduated with a degree in accounting way back in 2009. I wasn't able to land a job in the field and did a manual labor job since then. The company is doing layoffs, they still haven't given us details, so now I thought it's a good time to try accounting again.

I hear success stories of older people landing jobs, but they're still recent graduates. I haven't used my degree in so long so I don't know how to go about this. What should I even put in my cover letter?
