I'm just going to get right into this. I'm a student employee at a private university. I work as the audio technician for a performing group which is going on an international trip this spring with several other performaning groups. I should also mention that the tech crew (including myself) is made up of 3 people with completely different jobs. We essentially run the show with just the three of us.
The issue that's coming up here is compensation. Under the policies for my university, hiring student employees under contract is allowed, but only for TAs and research assistants. However, each member of our crew is getting paid by contract, not hourly. Furthermore, the department that oversees our performing group and the others going on the trip seems to be making us pay a $1,500 travel fee AND not get paid for doing this foreign trip. At least one of the other performing groups is getting their ~10 person crew's travel fees waived.
All of this seems highly unethical to me. First because we are working 25-30 hours during a slow week with maybe one performance and ~60 during a busy week and getting paid scraps. Second because they're expecting us to pay yo do our jobs for the foreign trip, jobs which literally nobody else at the university can do properly.
I just don't know what I can do because they have a history of looking down on student employees and taking advantage of our work. Some of the department heads are going on the foreign trip and not having to pay a dime. I feel like we don't have a ton of leverage and they won't listen to us. Yet, they are paying the other group's fees.
TL;DR I work as a student employee in a department that is taking advantage of mine and my crew's work by paying us measly wages for many hours of work and by making us pay to do our jobs on a foreign trip..a trip we'll be working on for free
