Never used a temp agency, looking for advice.

I've been unemployed for a decent stint, read a post talking about temp work. I don't live in a major metropolitan area but one is within a thirty to forty minute commute. I'm wondering if there are any good tips how to find a decent one, what to look for, and/or any insight into utilizing these agencies?
