How important are references?

Now I know that they are important and that you get someone to basically vouch for you, but aside from that, how important is it to have these people as friends or someone you talk to? I mean do you ever talk to some of your references anymore? Or do you just call and ask people if they'll be a reference prior to using them?

I'm sort of asking because I've been applying for jobs internally for a while however I've never really got any references out of anyone. I haven't stayed in a positing for more than a year but thats because new positions opened up. So while I've been doing well one way, i've sort of been burning a separate bridge.

Am I wrong in basically climbing the corporate ladder this way? Is there some way I can build up references better? I'm not very social outside of work so it's very hard for me to do social activities. Mainly because the only thing people do where I live is drink or go out to eat, which is absurdly expensive.

So what do you think? Are references really "THAT" important? Or is it just important that you've got the mandatory 3 people that will answer the questions the HM will ask?
