I got a call yesterday for a job that I applied for, and the lady asked for a quick phone interview, which was fine, and it went well.
1). One of the questions was:
"How many sick days would you say are acceptable to take?"
I was kinda baffled by the question (tried not to show it), but proceeded with answering anyways. It sounds like they are not okay with people taking sick days, which is horrible if someone truly needs them.
2). She asked if I'd be okay with travelling every once in a while (like a few times a year) to a different location, about 55min away from me on a car. I said, sure. However, there was no mention of whether they would compensate for the time and fuel spent to travel there (the interview was spontaneous, so I had no way to prepare for this question). Am I right to expect the job to compensate for these things?
3). She proceeded explaining some of the benefits. When she came to the point about retirement/pension, she said, 'our boss is really kind, and if he sees us working hard enough and meeting certain goals, he tries to improve the benefits", "for example, he is going to be looking into 401k soon if we do well enough".
I think that jobs should be giving these benefits by default, I don't think we should have to go above-and-beyond to have these basic benefits.
Again, I didn't know that there would be an interview, so I couldn't ask the questions I wanted to, but looking back, some of these things seem a bit concerning.
Tomorrow I have a 'job shadow', whatever that means, so I should have a better gauge of the place. However, I would still appreciate your opinion on the other factors, and I'll be sure to inquire further about them to help me make a decision.
