Work History Verification - Can I just put a coworker to verify that I worked there rather than my boss?

Hey everyone,

So title is basically the question. I’m filling out a background screening questionnaire and they’re asking for a contact and their number to verify my employment there. Would it be fine if I put my coworker as opposed to my boss? There’s no real reason other than I don’t want him to know I was planning on leaving if the background checkers screw something up and the company pulls the offer.

I had a bad history with my last job where I almost lost the job because the background checkers couldn’t get a hold of my job before that, so part of me would rather put the coworker to avoid that issues. That way if the checkers screw up and I lose the job I still have my current one.
