I’ve been teaching, both abroad and stateside, for the past seven years. My BA is in Spanish and my Masters is in Teaching (certified 7-12 Spanish). I LOVED teaching in my home state, Connecticut, but moved to Miami in August to be with my boyfriend, who has a government job here.
Teaching here is, to put it mildly, AWFUL in comparison to Connecticut. It doesn’t help that I am working at a rigorous charter school and am working twice as much as public school teachers for less pay. I feel like I am not teaching here, just training kids to pass the state exams. I am desperately unhappy and haven’t had luck finding other teaching jobs as Spanish isn’t exactly a high need area here. I feel like if I continue teaching here, I am going to grow to hate the profession, which is something that I don’t want!
I’ve been applying to jobs since August. Mostly at universities in academic advising and student support. I’ve had two interviews so far, but have not gotten further than a second interview.
Part of my problem is I don’t really know how to think outside the world of the classroom nor how to interview for a non-teaching position because I’m not sure what else I am qualified for. I’ve basically only worked in teaching, besides a work study stint in a university office. I also don’t know how to market my skills that I have learned from teaching or to “sell myself”, so to speak.
If anyone has any suggestions in terms of other industries in which I would be able to utilize the skills I learned in the classroom, I would really appreciate any help. Thanks in advance!
