Hi there. I have a situation that I’m trying to figure out. Currently, I’m employed with a company for 3 months now. One of the stipulations I gave them was that if I was hired, I’d be given time off during the holidays to see family back home. To my surprise, they said yes and have honored this agreement.
Now, here is where it gets interesting.
About a month ago, another company finally responded to an older submission (from around the same time I applied for my current job). So I spoke with folks with this company and after a number of interviews, I have a job offer. Now, the offer is for a job has a higher salary, has a much shorter commute time and best of all, will add a more valuable and rewarding experience and growth to further my career. However, they want me to start in a little over 2 weeks (the first full week after the New Year).
Call me old fashioned but I’ve always liked the idea of giving a company the standard 2-week notice. I do this for a couple of reasons: as a professional courtesy; not wanting to want to burn any bridges in case future opportunities; and simply because I just don’t want to be a dick to my coworkers and boss whom I developed a friendly and professional relationship with.
So, with this in mind, if I were to give my current job a 2-week notice, the first week I’m completely off and will be away on holiday vacation. The 2nd week will only be a partial work week as New Year’s Eve (Dec 31st) and New Year’s Day (Jan 1st) are company holidays, leaving me with only 3 actual working days in this 2-week notice.
My question to everyone is how would you handle this situation? See if the new company can offer a flexible start date (if I push it further, I will lose out on the higher salary earnings)? Or maybe forget the notice and completely ghost my current job? Or maybe something else altogether?
