Where could being assistant workplace safety guy lead me?

Had guy who is in charge of workplace safety in plant i work at come to inspect few things and sign off some documents.

At the end of his visit he asked if anyone here would like to be in charge of our department for workplace safety.

He didn't say much but I'm guessing it's just doing what he has just done every once in a while. I think that position is not paid because there is almost no work but i'm still thinking about signing up (have too much free time anyway).

Could this possibly lead me anywhere since i have almost no qualifications in that area (just one small course on general safety)?
