Rescheduled interview due to family emergency, because of this company went with other candidate. Where’d I go wrong?

As the title says, I was scheduled for a second interview with a company last Friday. A family emergency came up, and I knew there was no way I would be able to put my best foot forward in the interview with everything weighing on me. This all happened the day of. I called as soon as possible, left a voicemail and emailed the recruiter I had been communicating with. She said she understood and we could reschedule. I was so relieved!

I emailed her my availability to reschedule Sunday letting her know that I was still very interested in the position. I received an email back today stating “We’ve decided to move forward with one of the candidates interviewed Friday who really stood out and connected with the team well.” My heart sunk.

I wasn’t even given a chance. During the phone interview I was told they wouldn’t be filling this position until Dec/Jan so why move forward so quickly without interviewing all the candidates?

I was even instructed to send in writing samples on a topic they gave me. I worked hours on these and felt they were really good. It’s not like I was just asked to send in writing samples I had already written; I had to craft completely new pieces based around there company.

I posted this in the weekly mega thread but I really just wanted some advice on where I went wrong.

What can I learn from this? Is rescheduling an interview cause for not getting the position? Should I have just went into the interview regardless? Should I have sent in my availability to reschedule sooner?

I’m thinking about emailing the recruiter with my concerns but it’s probably best to just leave it alone. I guess it wasn’t meant to be.
