On Monday, I interviewed for a job with a new company. On Tuesday, I was terminated from my current job. If I continue to move along in the interview process with the new company, do I tell them that I was terminated?
This past Tuesday, I was fired from my job after being with the organization full time for close to 5 years. The reason I was given was because of subpar job performance in recent months. I learned after the fact that the decision was a bit controversial and actually came from the CEO and not my direct supervisor. I also felt the whole situation was dealt with rather poorly (agreed upon by my supervisor and other former coworkers), but that’s a whole other story. If any good came out of it, it’s that my former supervisor offered to be a reference for me as I look for new jobs.
Despite how it was dealt with, I don’t necessarily disagree with the decision. Within the past year, a combination of feeling burned-out with the job, plus some things I was dealing with in my personal life, regrettably impacted my performance negatively. Additionally, the job was at times incredibly stress inducing with its long hours (often 60-70 a week) and a lot of travel (I was away from home 16 days in October alone). Needless to say, before even being fired, I had been trying to get out as soon as possible.
That said, I had already been applying at different places in recent months and I landed an in-person interview which happened this past Monday. I thought it went well and really enjoyed the lady I interviewed with. She also shared with me that they would be wrapping up round 1 of the interview process before Thanksgiving and that there be a round 2 after Thanksgiving with a panel of 3-4 other employees in the organization.
Now if you’re keeping track of the days, you’ll notice that the interview happened on Monday….and I was terminated on Tuesday. So obviously in round 1, I had been speaking as if I still worked at my former organization. Now if I’m asked back for round 2, I feel I’ll be in an awkward spot. On one hand, I don’t want to jeopardize my chances at a job by sharing that I was terminated due to performance since the last time I saw them. But on the other hand, I would hate to lie and say that I still work there in round 2 to only then potentially be exposed if my termination came up in a reference or employment check.
Thoughts on how to handle this?
TL;DR: was already seeking to move on from my job. This past Monday, I had an in-person interview at a new place. Then on Tuesday, I was terminated from my job due to performance. There will be a round 2 in the interview process at the new place - if I’m invited back, do I share with them that I was terminated from my job since the last time I saw them?
