Looking to start a career in insurance - any advice from professionals in the industry? Further questions in post
Hello,
I am 28 years old and have been working in restaurants for my entire professional life and have worked my way up to general manager twice for 2 different companies. I’m currently living in FL and I just got my 2-20 general lines license. I have had interviews with State Farm (I applied) and Allstate (was approached by a recruiter). I have a few questions before I commit.
I have read that going independent instead of captive might be a better way to go. Can anyone attest to this?
What is a good baseline salary to ask for? I was thinking in the 35-38k range is that reasonable or can I ask for more without losing the opportunity? (Note: I am currently making 48k as a GM)
What can I expect to make in commissions my first year?
If I do decide to go captive which would be the better company? State Farm vs. Allstate as far as career growth and commission?
Lastly, anything I should know that could help me hit the ground running?
Thanks for any and all answers!
