I have an interview for a copywriter position. I have no experience and want to ask for some advice.
A copywriter position recently opened for the university I work for and lucky me, I scored an interview! This can potentially be a hugely important career move for me; I love writing and have desperately craved a writing-centric job for years now. And not just fluffy email bullshit, but actually writing content. I love seeing my written work out there, but I'm not confident and frankly embarrassed about what I put on paper, so I think a job that actually forces me to write would be good for me.
Here’s my dilemma; I have no idea how to parade myself as a competent, excellent choice for this job. I have no copywriting skills. Yeah I’ve generated social media content, emails for faculty and I have plenty of writing experience from college but nothing that is explicitly copywriting based. Hell I think the only reason I secured an interview is because of already being employed with the university, and lowballing the fuck out of my salary (I only asked for somewhere around the mid-high 40s, and I think the state average is around 60k).
How can I help myself? I have about a week and a half before the interview and my plan was going to be watching a bunch of those online courses on how to copywrite, brushing up on my AP style, and familiarizing myself with some other programs they require knowledge in. If any copywriters are out there, can you shed some advice on a pathetic new person? The potential of this job means a lot to me and I want to absolutely guarantee I can be a fighting contender against more experienced applicants.
Thank you!
