Am I wrong for leaving a job with a manager who’s constantly unprofessional?

Hey, guys. It’s been a rough couple of months. To make things short, unfortunately, today was the final push for me. I work in a retail job so obviously it’s gonna have it’s ups and downs, but there’s limits to every situation.

So, my manager (let’s call her Coney) has constantly been extremely unprofessional, and downright disrespectful to us, all the time, from the time I started (which was four months ago) until today. To give you a background of how she is, here’s what’s happened in the last couple of months.

She texted us all in a groupchat once with pictures of the store being slightly unkempt (we had new hires and they were still learning their way around the ropes), with the caption “Are you guys trying to ruin my morning or something? What the hell is this?”

She scheduled a meeting at 8am previously, and everyone showed up except for her. Didn’t make up for that meeting.

She screams/curses at us in front of customers, and threatens to fire us if we “upset” her. Multiple customers have pointed her personality out to me, but I’ve never said anything.

She rarely ever shows up for her own scheduled shifts, only showing up when she absolutely has to, and only points out the things we do wrong, never what we do right.

She has literally laughed or gotten irritated at customers, in their faces, to their faces, in front of me. I know customers can be difficult sometimes, but the last thing you ever want to do is start confrontation like that with the people keeping your business up. I find that so disrespectful and highly unprofessional. Like, come on now.

And then, today..... Today, she made us come to a meeting, and in the middle of it, while questioning us about products and store selling tactics, because none of us could answer her question, she stood up from her seat and said, “Okay, you know what? Now I’m pissed off.” And then, on top of basically throwing a tantrum during the meeting, she then asked me to start putting our products from our truck away, on my only day off. I asked her why, and she responded, “because I need help.” I literally was just stunned, and I just turned around and left.

Multiple people have left this job and I never figured out why until I finally just left today. The position itself is truly great, but the manager has driven at least 6 different new hires out of the door since I arrived. There’s no way she’s getting replaced, as I’ve been told that there’s nobody in our district willing to take her position as store manager.

I need money very badly, but I’m not going to be straight up disrespected just because of a horrible superiority complex. I’ve heard rumors about her personal life but I didn’t pay much attention to them just because I’m not that kind of person. To me, money will never justify being mistreated, ever. I’m sorry that her personal life isn’t so great right now, but that doesn’t mean that you get to be in such a heinous attitude all the time. She has three employees remaining, including me, and she’s losing one now. It hurts the location but it’ll let her know, if anything.

So, in your honest opinion, am I doing the right thing here? I’m struggling to figure out if leaving will really be the “right choice” vs. having another job without constantly being belittled. I do have another job in place, but I just need to know if this is currently the right thing to do. Thank you guys for any help, I really appreciate it.
