My son is sixteen and started his first job at a small local diner about five weeks ago. They told him his pay would be $7.25 an hour and he'd get 50% off of meals eaten before or after his shift.
He got his first paycheck and is making $5.25 an hour. I googled and apparently there's a law saying that during a 90 day training period, as a minor in our state, they can pay him that. But nobody told him.
He is scheduled for a lot of hours but they frequently cut him early and sometimes call him back in for a split shift. We drive him there and back, as he is working to save for car insurance, etc. We are losing a lot of sleep and gas money for this job. For instance, last Saturday, we had him there very early when they opened, then they cut him at 12:30 in the afternoon and wanted him back at 2:00 PM. He would have been home for about twenty minutes before he'd have to head out again. Oftentimes they'll work him for two hours and then cut him- that's four trips for us for him to make $11.
One of his coworkers (same age, newer than he is) is being paid the full $7.25. And when my son has purchased food before or after his shift, they won't give him the discount for various reasons (he is taking his piece of pie to go, or his dad and I were with him ,so he isn't eligible, etc)
He loves the job and is flourishing there. Neither my husband or I have ever worked at a diner or in the restaurant business so we don't know what's normal. Can anyone give us some advice? We are considering talking to him about applying at a local grocery store that will start him off at $9.50. We've never seen him so confident and happy and worry that he won't feel the same way elsewhere, but the gas money and time commitment required of us compared to how hard they work him/how little they work him and pay him is weighing on us.
