Potential promotion discussed, now what...?

Boss sent me a link last week to an internal vacancy that he knew I’d be interested in, which still reports to he. We then discussed the role in the sense of it’s duties and whilst he needs to find out a bit more about t and what’s next, he said he agrees it would be a great next step for me. Sounds like I have the buy in from my manager. He expects to know more about the role by next week, should I arrange a time to discuss further and formally apply? He is pretty transparent and it sounded like he was working with me, but I would still need to formally apply / probably interview with him and his superior.
Would you be proactive and keep checking in with your boss, or wait for them to come back to you?
