Hey guys. So I’m currently feeling super frustrated over my job and believe that I am being treated unfairly by my manager. I have been working as a server at a Chinese buffet restaurant for around three months now and got hired right when the restaurant first opened. I started out as a part time worker (about 20hrs/week) due to having another job. Once I left that job I asked my manager if I could work full time but he told me that we were over staffed and that I would have to wait until people quit to get more hours which is fair enough. I felt hopeful because during one of our staff meetings he said that he would give priority to people with an open schedule (which I have) since he knows that we will be more reliable and most of our focus will be on the job. A few weeks pass by and I notice a few more people have quit. When I checked my schedule last week I noticed that I wasn’t scheduled to work one of my usual shifts. I only had 3 shifts that week instead of my usual 4 so I was pretty upset as I saw no reason for me to lose hours. I ask my manager again if it would be possible for me to increase my hours. He tells me that he’ll see what he can do. Today when I went into work to look at my schedule I notice that this week I am only scheduled for 2 shifts now. I am absolutely fucking livid. There are people on that schedule who aren’t available most of the time getting more hours than I am which is completely unfair. I don’t think I’m a bad worker. I do everything I’m supposed to do, I show up on time, try my best, etc. I think my manager just doesn’t like me. I know what I’m about to say may seem controversial but I think racism may possibly come into play? I hate to bring racism into this but just hear me out real quick. I’m white and the vast majority of my coworkers (including all the managers) are Asian. I’ve noticed that most of the people who have quit or gotten fired so far are either black or white. I know that’s probably a completely far fetched theory but I can’t think of any other reason for this to be happening to me. To go from working the same shifts every week for a few months to getting half your hours taken away without warnings explanation , after people have been quitting, and after being told that my open schedule would give me priority for extra shifts makes no sense. I really like my job aside from these issues and just don’t know what to do. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
