Does working for a retail/fast-food entry level position hurts your chances to get a graduate level job?
There are several studies reporting that underemployment 'hurts' your chances at a better job. After reading these studies, it seems like underemployment doesn't hurt your chances as much as it doesn't improve them much. Therefore, being underemployed is still preferable to being unemployed when it comes to filling in your resume gaps.
However, the average college grad who's underemployed is still working in a position that requires a certain skill level, so their job is still worth mentioning in a resume. But what about grads who finished college and haven't done any work for a year except for entry level fast food or retail? I've been advised several times to leave off my retail job from my resume as there's a stigma associated with such a job and makes it harder to get a job than listing yourself as unemployed.
I already know that I made many mistakes to be in this position a year after I finished grad school, but at this point I can only change things that I have control over and my resume is one of them.
