Hey guys, I'm really in a pinch right now and would like the advice of the masses to let me know what direction I should take.
Backstory:
I am based in Singapore and joined the firm 1.5 years ago and can tell you that even as I am typing this, I absolutely love my job. I was hired on a 1 year contract but was converted to full time 9 months in. I was always on point, making sure I replied to all my emails within the day. I put in extra hours on my own as well to finish any extra projects and requests that came my way even on the timezone difference. I was crushing project after project and my bosses were telling me how I was excelling at my job. Everyone was thanking me for my hard work and gave me the nickname "The Machine".
Here's the problem:
My team consists of only 2 people. 6 months ago my boss quit and due to being unable to hire a correct personally immediately, I was tasked to take over her "high level projects" and also report directly to our director who is located in London. In the middle of handling the projects, I was also tasked to interview a few new hires. My director told me that he wants to hire someone of the same rank to work with me. After a few back and forth with a few candidates, we settled on one and got her on-board 2 months ago.
Fast forward to today, after many nights of slogging over many different time zones (Japan, Australia, India, USA, London), I've finally completed the task at hand and got great views on the projects I did. While at lunch today, I overheard my colleague talking to her financial agent and i realized that she was earning, not 10% not 20% but more than TWICE of my yearly salary.
I was shattered. I literally have no mood to work right now and I feel like quitting because I feel so underpaid and unfairly treated. 2 weeks ago, my boss still said that he was seeking a promotion for me the next year, but i doubt my pay would be doubled. Take note that my colleague is doing the exact same stuff as me, I've checked the system and we're both of the same rank and we both report to the same line manager.
Other things to note:
- I was denied the yearly increment that all employees get because I was just converted and my full timer contract has run over 1 year.
- I am tasked to train and teach my new colleague on the technical aspects of the job which he is still weak at.
- I am expected to continue to take over my former boss's projects because I know the work style of all the guys that I worked with.
I have a call with my boss tomorrow. There is a Major project coming up in January which I know he needs me. I totally feel like quitting in December because I'm underpaid with so much more responsibilities:
- Should I let him know that I would like a pay raise ? How much more should I ask for ? (I have plenty of use cases for my job)
- Should I reveal to him that I know my colleagues's pay grade ?
- Should I quit my job ? I don't think I can put in 150% effort any more.
- What else should I do ?
Thank you for your advice in advance.
