What to transition to after years of manual labor jobs?

My friend has been working manual labor type jobs for years, but he’s in his mid 30s now and is already feeling the effects of it, and he just had a baby so he’s looking for more stability in his life. He’s not sure what field to go into though cause nothing will really pay as well, especially with his limited experience.

What would be the best way to proceed? Should he try to get a certificate in something first, or do most places not really care about that? He doesn’t have a degree and he’s been doing driving/delivery jobs and landscaping type stuff, so I’m not sure what he’d be qualified for that would pay enough, especially now that he has a baby to take care of.
