Can an employer require me to perform mandatory training for exams outside of work and unpaid?

I work for an MSP and my employer is requiring me to complete Cisco certification. This take approximately 20-30 hours of training and then I have to do the exam at home.

Others at my workplace have done this in their own time, but I refuse to perform compulsory training for work outside of business hours at home whilst I'm not compensated. I have been slowly progressing over some months when it's been quiet at work, and I'm near the end of my training but my boss has mandated I do this exam today, which would mean studying hours and hours after I'm home from a 9 hour work day. I also have to pay and complete the exam in my own time as well. If I pass the exam, I believe I would be compensated for the exam fees, however I've been told this is not the case if we don't pass.

I don't have time at work since we've been heavily understaffed for months and I'm now training up a new member of staff who started a few weeks ago. Should I be compensated for this training as it's REQUIRED and directly relates to my work? In QLD Australia.
