What exactly is a scrum master?

I was speaking with a friend of mine when they told me that they just got certified to be a scrum master. They then told me that people can make about 100k in this role, and so obviously I looked it up.

I told my boyfriend about the job and he thinks it’s a pyramid scheme. Does anyone have a clear definition of the role or what it’s like to be a scrum master?
