When is redundancy not redundancy?

Please forgive the cryptic title!

Six people at my place of work were made redundant at the start of October, all from different departments. All of them, it should be pointed out, were hired in the last 12 months, all from the same company that shut down, and all but one were extremely competent, well-liked, and professional.

Of those who were made redundant, 4 have since been replaced. They were openly shopping around for new candidates before they were even gone, I was privy to at least one conversation about how the search is going.

Is this normal? To me this feels like "we just don't like you" on a corporate scale.
