So at my new job a couple days ago a coworker of mine mentioned that they were increasing everyone’s base pay to 18/hr.
I was curious and asked questions regarding this. She told me that she thinks they are raising everyone’s raise because they are trying to keep people from leaving the job. As they know places like McDonalds and Walmart are now paying 16/hr.
We work as Bank Tellers for a big “small” bank. Before the raise my base pay was 15/hr plus the bilingual bonus pay which increases my pay to a total of 16.50/hr.
Now part of me feels bad for my co worker. She gets paid less than me. Even though she had prior experience as a bank teller for another bank and that she has two years in with this current bank. She currently has a base pay of 16/hr, but when she started she received a base pay of 14/hr. Keep in mind she had experience as a bank teller elsewhere. Meanwhile, I only had 6 months of cash handling experience as a cashier and 1.5 years of experience in customer service.
Now the increase in base pay was true. Earlier today I was pulled into the bank managers office and was told that my base pay would be increased to 18/hr plus my bilingual bonus. That leaves me at around 19.50/hr.
The manager told me to keep it to myself and even mentioned that I joined at a good time. I have only worked there for about 5-6 weeks. She also said that the minimum base pay increase was different for everyone else. It could be up to 16-18. I apparently got the max.
Also during the small meeting when the manager mentioned the increase to 18/hr I stupidly mentioned that my coworker mentioned it to me and even used her name. The manager was surprised that I knew about the pay increase beforehand. Is this something that I should be concerned about? I honestly wasn’t thinking at the time and it just slipped.
