Hello Reddit. I would appreciate some advice please. I was recently recommended for a Project Management position and did the initial interview. It went well. I believe that i am the primary candidate since i am a local in my area where they want to renovate 18 homes during a 7 month duration with a possibility for more.
They sent me an offer of 5k per month with limited benefits since they want me to do the work on a contract basis as a contractor working for them. This includes free gas and travel expenses although i would need to use my personal vehicle. I countered at 6k with a company vehicle provided and explained that i believe the pay was low because of my experience and skills, lack of benefits such as healthcare and the workload involved. I was hoping to be accepted. This is what i received :

Unfortunately we are not in a position at the moment to offer more than $5k per month during this time period. What we can do now is clarify that our intent would be, assuming all that goes well with your project work, to increase to $5,500 for subsequent months of work after December. We can also provide an additional $200 for this contract to you for the use of your vehicle and pay for all fuel costs related to your work.
Might that arrangement also work for you? Also, if you’d like to discuss further we would be very happy to get on the phone as early as tomorrow to talk.

Now to be honest, the 5k is more than i make now but i know the workload and lack of benefits is bad and i do really want to work for the company for the experience and future work in other countries they do. I do not want to use my own vehicle and 5.5k would be the lowest i would accept. Also, the previous Project Manager who suggested i apply to replace him told me my 6k was fair and to continue to negotiate (making it seem that he was payed above that based on his reaction and advice). The company bought him in, pays his rent and gives him a vehicle i beleive as he is not local here as i am. I beleive they are trying to lowball me because i am a local here.
Any advice ? I would like to work for them but i feel 6k, a company vehicle and gas is fair since of the workload and lack of benefits. Please help ! Thanks !
