On negotiating salary

Went thru round 1 of interview went fine, round 2 also went fine, this time with a different person. Get a call back from the first person on round 1 and was told the interview went great they just don't think they can meet my salary expectations. Said I am asking way too much. I told them I really just want to have it within a certain range but I'm nervous I might've steered then away. I was told I would be getting a call back tomorrow. Any tips on getting what I want? I don't want to sell myself too short but I also really want to work for them
