How to frame reason for looking for new job in this situation?

So I’ve been working with this company for just over five months. The work was steady at first, and I ended up automating 75% of the work so that I ended up having most of my day free. It was a pretty sweet gig.

Then came my participation in bids. Work was hell for a month or two as I had to work 12-14 hour days, and weekends. This is what led to me looking for a new job. I also complained to my boss about the hours and he spoke with the guy in charge of the bids about it.

Now, I struggle to find work. My boss told me to charge my hours to jobs that I had already done weeks ago, but I know that there will be a time this has to end. I know that if this keeps up, my time is limited.

My real reason for wanting to quit is that the job is too easy and I’d rather have a more technical role, but I feel I can’t say that directly. I’ve been saying that the reason is that I automated most of my work away and I’m looking for more responsibility. Is that a good reason?
