Employer says I can't take a day off every 5 weeks, is that too much?

I have a new job that wants to train me up to be a manager position, and I told them I wanted to take 1 day off every 5 weeks to take a 3-day trip (Friday-Sunday) from SF to LA to visit my family (and girlfriend).

They said that every 5 weeks is "a bit much" and said every 12 weeks seems more reasonable. I can't bear the thought of not seeing my family and girlfriend every 3 months (I would essentially be meeting them 4 times a year...)

PRO: On one hand, this potential management role could be BIG because they are looking to move me back to Pasadena and bump up my rate from $20 -> $37/hr full time (but no promises). So I would make more and be with my family.

CON: But not being able to seeing my family (and especially girlfriend) for 3 months at a time seems like it would make my life exponentially less happy.

I feel like asking for 1 day off every 5 weeks or so seems reasonable (with a 4-5 week notice), but I'm also not too into the SF "hustle culture". Am I asking for too much?
