I really need help improving my interview skills, but I think for that I need to identify what's wrong with me. Please help, even small advice appreciated!
Sorry for Long Post, TLDR: I get good amount of interview opportunities but bomb my on-site interviews. I am unable to properly explain, talk, draw and lose my interest after few mins. I have some mental issues but I have never mentioned in any application or interviews. You can also read bold texts below for a short read
Background: I am in US and an electrical engineer with Masters degree and 3 years experience in the top company in my field (like fortune top 30 company, its unreal how I managed that). I had interviewed for like 15-20 companies(including all the big tech or top five or GAFAM) since my graduation and have managed to clear just one which I am at now. That too happened because they were desperate and interview was cut short to just 2 round and no on-site( unlike 6-7 rounds at all other interviews). I have ADHD, anxiety disorders, depression. My company is filled with PhDs and Ivy League graduates but since they are engineers they are mostly inclined towards implementation, finding solutions & getting work done. On the other hand, I am known for my hypothesis, experiments and finding problems. Also as a bit rude. A lot different mentality than my colleagues. I am evaluated same or a bit better than colleagues and that's only because I work hard and long, not because of quality of work.I am happy with the work I do but not with the team & leadership. I have never done any negotiations and absolutely don't care about my salary. I do care about the contribution and the mark I expect to leave in my field.
Experience: I am passively applying to positions, something like a couple every month. I do get decent amount of impromptu calls from recruiters on Linkedin and also for positions I applied to including all top companies. This makes me believe my resume and profile is good. I am also able to clear like 50% of 1st round (phone interview). Some of them being just call with manager. I never feel sufficiently prepared for interview but I know that happens with everyone. I have never mentioned about my mental issues in any interview feeling that might lower my chance. Officially they are not supposed to be partial but we know they are biased and that won't be good for me. Now on all the interview days, I think about either cancelling/skipping or just somehow getting through the interview, absolutely don't think about getting selected. I try to get familiar and comfortable with the interviewer, talking in the manner I do with my colleagues at work. Maybe that's not good. The main problem I face is on technical front. I feel I am never able to express what I am thinking or what I am trying to explain. I use a lot of diagrams but mess up the clarity of them by overwriting and scribbling. I think a lot of solutions simultaneously and sometimes lose my track and so unable to explain properly. Same happens when I speak. I leave my sentences and explanation in half and would suddenly start with other solution. Same has been my work technique as well but it excels for me at work because I get sufficient time to think through and express all the solutions I am thinking, unlike in interviews when I am under pressure of time and their perception of me. I do have to code sometimes and that occupies like 20-30% of my interviews. Same thing happens and I either write a very messy code or leave it in half or write multiple things together. I also do better in 1st half(max 20-25 mins) of any round but absolutely lose my interest and attention in 2nd half. I usually feel my interview went well if not bad though. Feedback I get are usually ok.
