My background is full of twists and turns, which has led to a very broad skillset. Unfortunately, no one skill is so deep that I could get a senior-level position in any one of them, I don't think.
I would like to leverage this in a senior-level position like Chief of Staff to the CEO, VP of Strategy, Senior Business Associate, or perhaps as a consultant, all of which look favorably upon a varied skillset.
But, I'm afraid of looking too unfocused to be hirable.
In any case, here is some of my background, in reverse chronological order:
- Currently a Ph.D. candidate in Business Administration. Concentration was on data science and information systems, but my research focus is on quantitative modeling to assist in decision analysis
- Prior to this, I was a senior-level manager at a small startup, which was basically a generalist position. I ran the Financial Planning & Analysis model, did some data analytics, helped with marketing, and eventually built out the data warehouse front and back end. I split my time 45/45/10 between Business Intelligence, finance, and marketing initiatives
- During this, I was finishing a Master's of Science in Finance
- Prior to that, I started a very successful affiliate marketing business, which I sold for enough to keep me comfortable for years
- I also took a coding bootcamp where I learned Ruby on Rails and related technologies during this time, both to help me build my affiliate site and to brush up on academic coding skills
- I have a B.S. in Physics
- Lastly, I have 10 years of sales experience
So, like I said, I'm all over the place. My favorite role so far was the generalist position at a startup, but it was super-small. I would like something along those lines when I graduate but on a much larger scale.
How can I best use my diverse skillset to my advantage here?
