How reliable a plan is it for a college student to go around to companies at random and ask for jobs/paid internships?

Like most Redditors, I'm a prospective engineering student. I'm currently enrolled at Columbus State Community College, and hope to eventually transfer to Ohio State. But I have to cover living expenses somehow. Not counting tuition, I need $1,500 a month. Or $18,000 a year. Bare minimum. I can't lower them. Not by much, anyway. And it might seem obvious, but an academic advisor at CSCC explained to me that it's pretty much undoable to work full time while also being a full time student. So if I can't work full time, how am I supposed to cover living expenses? I've talked to various financial aid advisors, TRiO, CSCC's "Student Advocacy and Financial Stability," none have been any help. So I'm in a very desperate place. I've been turning to Reddit a lot because the only reliable advice is coming from actual students whose examples I can hopefully follow.

But one guy says I should try and get a paid internship of some kind. Pretty reasonable sounding advice at first. But I explain that internships are competitive and I have no skills that would make me a worthy candidate for an internship. But not only does he say this doesn't matter, he suggests that I, with my zero skills, look up companies in my area that are relevant to my major, go to them in person, ask to speak to the recruiter/leave my resume, and explain "Hi, I'm a college student with no skills and nothing to offer, but I'd like to work in this industry. Can you give me some kind of paid job anyway? Even if you don't have an opening that fits me? Can you just make one for me? Also because I'm a college student I need lots of money for very little hours so I can go to class."

This advice wasn't given flippantly either. He meant this sincerely and he wants me to pick out 10 companies and update him on what happens after I contact these 10 companies. And he even said "Go ask r/jobs if they think this is a good idea." I don't think this is a good idea. But I'm desperate so I hope you guys can tell me I'm wrong. The only relevant companies in my area only keep weekday business hours. So to do this I'm gonna have to call off work. As if I have days off to spare. But I'm so desperate. I can see no path to $1500 a month + free time for class. I'm at the mercy of other people's ideas.
